Since 1372 the "Kivelinge", or "little fighters", have been part of Lingen's history. At that time it was the young, unmarried citizens' sons who successfully defended Lingen against enemy occupying forces with their lion-heart courage. A heroic act that earns them the right to celebrate their “Kivelingsfest” every three years on the marketplace in Lingen.
Today, they still are an integral part of the townscape, for instance when they take visitors through Lingen on guided tours.
